While the development of the Nebi Waterfront Park in Dover is a contemporary project, the roots of this site run deep. The native Abenaki communities, and the eventual settlement, town, and city of Dover, all grew and prospered as a direct result of their integral relationship to the Cocheco River. As a rich fishing site, a conduit for materials, a powerhouse for industrial mills, and a recreational area, the Cocheco remains the dynamic, vital centerpiece of downtown Dover. River Roots celebrates the relationship between the city and its river, and the long history of human reliance lived along this crucial waterway.
